Works commence to the Spire at St. Ignatius Church, Richmond

Project Update #01

The Spire of St Ignatius Church is undergoing works to protect and ensure the longevity of this historic and iconic architecture of Richmond.

The works to Spire include:

  • Restoration of the exterior masonry of the spire, including tooling of delaminated stone, repointing of joints and tinting of tooled stone,

  • Replacement of some concrete louvres to Belfry to match original,

  • Monitor vertical cracking over the next 12 to 24 month period to ascertain whether movement is active,

  • Carry out miscellaneous stormwater drainage repair works, including sealing the junction of downpipes to drains currently not sealed,

  • Concrete repairs to internal concrete floors in spire, including cutting out and replacement of corroded reinforcement or cleaning and coating of corroded reinforcement; reinstatement of concrete section where there has been spalling or cutting back to expose more reinforcement; coating of the concrete top surface to prevent future water / moisture ingress, and epoxy fill crack to the Level 7 slab.

  • Lightning conductor system inspection and repair as and if required

Works are expected to be completed in late 2021.
